On the left is an Earth-based photograph of the galaxy NGC 1275, in the constellation Perseus about 300 million light years away. To observers on Earth this galaxy appeared irregular, but it was indistinct enough to leave many questions unanswered. At best, astronomers could tell NGC 1275 was a Seyfert galaxy; some thought it was actually two galaxies colliding. With the Hubble Space Telescope (image on the right) scientists were able to get a clearer view.
The image is a composite of two photographs, each taken with a different single-color filter (one admitting only green light, the other only red). The numerous blue dots are very dense, compact globular clusters. Unlike the stars
